No Cardio….How Sad!

prescription

Well, I finally got in to see a Sports Medicine Dr about my lower back/hip pain that I have been experiencing for years, but in just the last 2 years (since I have gotten more serious about my weight lifting) it had really became a bother. I had been working with my chiropractor for about a year and a half and he finally suggested that I go to a medical DR who specialized in Sport Medicine, to see what he thought about my pains.

The first part of the consultation went great, but he wasn’t finding anything wrong. Then he had me lay down and began poking around my gluteus maximus muscle and my hip bone and I was in excruciating pain! His thoughts, that we might be looking at a bulging disk, and that I probably have bursitis on the outside of my hip. So I now need to get Xrays, and MRI and am taking some inflammatories for a couple of weeks, until I see him again. OH and the worst part… NO CARDIO for 2 weeks. NO running, no biking, no Torch Your Thighs circuit! As much as I don’t like doing cardio….knowing its been cut out of my routine is going to be hard. But I am at the point where I want to get this back thing resolved. It’s no fun living almost daily in pain. I plan to do some light weight lifting on my cardio days, or I might just lose my mind! He said adding some pilates might also help, so time to get out my pilates DVDs and get to work!

  1. Ang,

Are you taking fish oil supplements regularly?

I’m generally skeptical of supplements, but I had chronic problem with neck pain for almost four years (the result of getting sucker-punched defending a girl’s “honor” when I was 19) and I tried everything from muscle relaxants to the chiropractor.

It was really severe. Some mornings I woke up and literally couldn’t move my head from side to side. I can’t describe how painful it was.

In the end, the only thing that worked long-term was when I started supplementing with fish oil. I take around 3600 grams, twice a day. Neck pain, stiffness and immobilization has disappeared completely.

I’ve read a lot of research around the use of Omega 3s to counteract inflammation. At least one study showed it to be as effective at reducing swelling as NSAIDs.

    Just a thought ….

    Matt

  2. Hey Matt,

I am taking and have been taking Total EFA’s for years, and they have helped with my knee pain, but have done nothing for my back. But thanks for the advice! Sure wish it was that easy! ;)

  3. Hey. Check out John Sarno’s Healing Back Pain. It cured me of a similar situation. Good luck. Bye and never give up :-)
