Time to Go Green

…and no I am not talking about Eco-Friendly Green. Even though that is an excellent idea as well. For tips on how to do that, you can read more HERE.

I am talking about your green vegetables.

When I first meet with my clients, we talk about nutrition. I always ask them what they eat for vegetables and most of my answers are: corn and potatoes. I think those are the 2 vegetables that we have all grown up eating. And while these are good for you, these are higher on the glycemic index, which are foods we want to eat in moderation. So what I tell my clients is that their goal is to get at least 2 servings each day of green vegetables. Why? Green vegetables are lower in calories, fat and higher in fiber than starchy carbohydrates. You can eat more of them to help fill you up with GOOD calories instead of calories that are less beneficial to your body.

Here are some of the good GREEN vegetable choices:

*Broccoli

*Spinach

*Green Beans

*Lettuce

*Asparagus

*Brussel Sprouts

*Collard Greens

*Cucumbers

*Green Peppers

*Kale

*Peas

In my diet, I get my green vegetables at my 3 main meals. I add either spinach or broccoli to my eggs in the morning, at lunchtime, I have broccoli and/or lettuce or green beans with chicken breast or ground turkey and at supper, I have some type of stir fry veggies or lettuce. It’s strange, but when I don’t get in 3 servings of greens, my body knows, I just don’t feel right and I start to crave it! I guess its better to crave spinach than chocolate!

How many servings of GREENS do you eat daily?

    hi angie,
long time reader, first time comment”er” :)
i love my green veggies. i slip them into everything! i put a big handful of spinach in my soup right before eating it, and it tastes so good lightly wilted in. i load my sandwiches with lettuce or spinach and it adds a nice crunch and freshness to it. i LOVE myself some steamed broccoli with lunch or dinner. my favourite must be snap peas, right out of the bag like people eat chips. yummy night time snack at only 40cal a cup!
    keep up the great site!
