Tips for Those New to Exercise

If you really want to get fit through exercise, you are going to have to take that first step and actually start doing it. It might seem like you will have along way to go in order to reach your fitness goals, but you will never get there if you don’t decide to start.

If you are just beginning on your path to fitness, here are the key things to keep in mind:

Know that the Soreness Goes Away - If you have never really been an active person before, it is important to know that after your first workout, you are probably going to be pretty sore for a few days. Even people who are experienced exercisers get sore once in a while, but it is especially pronounced in those new to exercise. Don’t worry, it’s the worst at the beginning and it gets rapidly better as you stick to your exercise routine.

Take It Slow At First - The key here is that you should be exerting yourself, but not totally exhausting yourself right out of the gate. You want to be challenged, certainly, but don’t try to push yourself to the limit. At this early stage of your fitness career, your body and muscles are probably only accustomed to mild increases in heart rate and lifting small weights. When you increase the stress on your body too much, too fast, it can cause muscle cramps or even injury.

Get Educated - The main difference between exercisers who struggle for months and never see any progress and the ones who can consistently get more and more fit is education. The more you learn about diet, exercise, and how your body works, the more you will be able to accomplish. While fitness books are a fantastic resource, you don’t even have to spend any money on books to learn about diet and fitness. I have personally have had clients acquire enough knowledge to rival that of an experienced personal trainer just by constantly reading articles, websites, and blogs on fitness just like this one.

Try a little of Everything - The world of exercise is wide open to you, and it is to your benefit to explore everything that it has to offer. Jogging not your style? You might try jump roping instead for cardio. Not a big fan of lifting weights? You might instead do yoga for strength and flexibility. No matter what you goal and no matter what your preferences are, you are sure to find an exercise that you both enjoy and can help you meet your fitness goals.

Trying a bunch of things actually has a few benefits. Firstly, it will help you get an understanding of what you like most in the exercise world, and help it become more fun for you. Secondly, a variety of exercise will actually help work your body better. By working your muscle in different ways, you stimulate them in different ways, and therefore encourage the most possible muscle growth and fat loss.

These are all great tips and yes I agree with you two–it’s addicting once you form the habit. Another great tip for those just starting out is to enlist a friend, or if you’ve got a friend who’s already into fitness ask if you can go to the gym or a fitness class with her for extra motivation and to help you feel comfortable as a newbie.
